Dee Ford is no longer a member of the San Francisco 49ers.
Ford was released by the Niners on Wednesday in a move that had been expected since he was placed on injured reserve in December because of recurring back problems.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Tuesday that a move would be forthcoming with Ford after he indicated at the owners' meetings in March that he had played his final snaps with the team.
Lynch didn't see a lot of hope in him being a factor in the future. Dee ran into a bad situation with his back where he couldn't get healthy and we tried to be as patient as possible. I don't think he's going to be a part of us.
Because Ford has been dealing with an ongoing back issue, the Niners had been patient before releasing him so as to spread out his salary cap charges. The Niners will let go of most of the money left on his contract after June 1. The move saves a lot of money.
The release of Ford is a disappointment for the Niners. Ford was acquired by the Niners in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers signed Ford to a five-year, $85 million deal with hopes that he and Bosa will wreak havoc on quarterbacks for years to come.
When Ford had 6.5 sacks in 11 games, the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl.
Ford played in just 18 regular-season games with 9.5 sacks in three seasons in San Francisco He played in six games with three sacks.
The 49ers used their first pick in the draft to take defensive end Drake Jackson.
Lynch said in April that Jackson jumped off the film in terms of his talent and length and his ability to turn the corner. His best stuff is in front of him, that's what we think.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the season.
