Dave Gettleman made a declaration during the pre-draft process after falling in love with a prospect. I saw a professional quarterback after watching a few series. He said that he was in love with Daniel Jones.
Jones was drafted by the Giants out of Duke, a school where football is fourth on the depth chart behind basketball and lacrosse. He has a 12-25 record in the games he has played. It would be nice to call him mediocre.
I am prepared to make a declaration like Gettleman.
If NFL GMs believe that Daniel Jones looks like a quarterback, then it’s probably why so many throughout the league don’t respect Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and other Black quarterbacks. All the progress that has been made on the field when it comes to Black quarterbacks in the NFL is surface level at best. According to stories and quarterback rankings, Jackson would never be a top tier/ tier 1 quarterback, and that Mahomes played streetball. The ArizonaCardinals put a clause in Murray's new contract that requires him to have at least four hours per week of self-study because they think he's stupid.
Code words have always been used to attack black quarterbacks. They rely on pure athletic ability. They aren't the leaders of men Their ability to create is related to their lack of preparation. They don't look like a quarterback for a lot of people.
Under the security of anonymity, coaches, general managers, talent evaluators, scouts, and executives will say what they want. This is how they feel about the most exciting and dynamic player in the league, the man who is one of two unanimous Most Valuable Players in league history, and the quarterback that every young person who plays the position models their game after.
If this is how they view Black quarterbacks that are on the cover of Madden and are the reason why the ArizonaCardinals play on national TV, then can you imagine how they view other Black people in the football league?
Brian Flores is suing the league because they can't hire black coaches. We haven't had a majority black owner. The number of black GMs and team presidents can be counted on a few fingers.
Colin and Eric are not at training camp because of this.
This is the reason why Deshaun has the largest guaranteed contract. The good ol' boys club that runs the NFL doesn't have an issue with the alleged behavior that led to it due to the fact that he was always a non threatening "company man" that made white people feel at ease. His sins were more than forgivable to them.
The struggle for melanated signal callers has been going on for a long time and this week proved it. Despite being the only football player not named Tom Brady who voters unanimously selected as the best player in football, Jackson has been the target of ridicule since his college days.
Before he was a pro, there were slights against Jackson that began before he was a pro. Even though Jackson won the Walter Camp and Maxwell Awards, he wasn't the cover boy of the College Football Preview edition of the magazine. Even though Jackson was better as a junior than he was as a sophomore, he didn't look like a quarterback. He finished third in the race for the award. Jackson had to sit in the Green Room, as he was the final pick of the first round, after white quarterbacks were selected before him.
Jackson has more Pro Bowl selections than everyone else. He would have been the top pick.
Jackson was in negotiations last year. It was not a good idea for him to have an agent, as if it was impossible for a black man to play quarterback in the NFL and know how to read/bargain his own contract. The market has increased the numbers for what a quarterback like Jackson can ask for and then realized how much more he will make from his oncoming deal because he doesn't have to give anyone a commission.
They figure out how to overcome the new obstacle every time. The goal posts are quick to move. This week was a good example of that. Black quarterbacks will always be seen as Black quarterbacks, and never just a quarterback, because so many watch, coach, and control the game of football.
