Mekhi Becton, an offensive lineman for the New York Jets, returned to the field for the first time in over a year on Wednesday.
Robert Saleh, the coach, said that Becton, drafted 11th overall in 2020 as a potential franchise left tackle, played right tackle in practice and will stay there for the rest of the season.
The shake-up was rumored since the end of last season because George Fant played so well at left tackle. It is official now.
After the first practice, George felt a lot more comfortable on the left side. They both have the ability to play the left side. The combination was a better one.
The Jets downplayed the significance of the switch, but there's no denying that left tackle is more prestigious and higher paying than right tackle. "This doesn't mean Mekhi's left tackle days are over, but it's telling the team made the move so quickly without a competition."
He claimed he was not focused on prestige or money.
"If I'm on the field, I don't care whether it's left or right," said Becton, who tore his knee in Week 1.
In the mini camp, his status was cloudy because of his conditioning. He showed up overweight in June and the coaches were concerned. During his injury rehabilitation, Becton was thought to be in the 400s.
He was thinner on Wednesday. He lost a lot of weight, and the organization was happy about it.
He got himself into football shape, but I'm not going to put a lot of weight on him. He is a gifted person. I'm very excited about his direction.
He said he hit his goal. He lost a lot of weight according to Ann Claiborne. He worked with the team's trainers and conditioning staff during the break.
His girlfriend was pregnant with the couple's first child and he decided to skip the off-season program.
The Jets' offensive line has a lot of potential if he stays in shape and healthy. They also have Laken Tomlinson at guard, Alijah Vera-Tucker at guard, andConnor McGovern at center.
The offensive line is pretty good.
Vera-Tucker is learning a new job. He moved to the right side to accommodate a veteran left guard. The two young players, Vera-Tucker and Becton, are learning new spots at the same time, and that's fine with Saleh.
He was excited about that side. I think we have two potential All- Pros.
