A new demo raises the bar when you think deepfakes can't get any better.

A group of researchers working at theSamsung Artificial Intelligence Center in Moscow recently unveiled their latest work on one-shot "neural head avatars technology" in a project they call "MegaPortraits."

Egor Zakharov's team presented their work at a multimedia tech conference and he was excited to share it with the world.

Take a look at these examples, which show ordinary people transforming into amazing replicas of famous people.

Uncanny Valley

The resulting animations are convincing even though they have artifacts. Portrait paintings can be made to look like they're living, like "Harry Potter"-style, thanks to the deep fake tech.

The first neural avatar approach to achieve this is what it does. A model that can run in real-time was created.

It's hard to imagine a world where this kind of technology isn't abused. The live, lightweight student model is locked to prevent misuse, but they don't talk about misuse with the more powerful main model.

Scientists Jack into subjects' brains, find that they can identify deep fakes.
