It has never been as big as it is right now. The success of the MCU films, TV spinoffs, and some of their games seem to fit into the mold of any other mold. There is a lot of potential within that world for games of all kinds to be made, even though games have had some rough patches between cheap movie tie-ins and the controversial games-as-a-service attempt. The rumor that began circulating was somewhat unique and has now been revealed to be true.
Firaxis revived the XCOM series with last generation's XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2. These tactics games set the standard for the genre and paved the way for a small revival with the likes of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. The team wants to take a more tactical approach to the game and use some characters that aren't often used. If you are confused as to how a tactical superhero game will end up looking, we have all the information you need here.
The release window for the movie was revealed during the Gamescom presentation. It was delayed until Summer Game Fest, where it was released on October 7, 2022,
Firaxis was able to let us know all the platforms the game will come to. If you own a PC or a console, you will be able to play the game. What differences there will be between versions, specifically last- and current-gen consoles, is still not known.
We don't have a lot of information about the game at this point, but we can still learn a lot from the reveal trailer.
Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Captain America are just a few of the big names from that team who will be seen in the movie. The main force of the plot will be the spawn of the Underworld, which will make it darker than other media. Lilith was awakened from her long slumber, and she has begun her own quest to summon an even greater evil.
The team known as the Midnight Suns are made up of heroes with their own supernatural talents, and they are going to fight this threat. Their first act is to bring out a secret weapon of their own, Lilith's own child, known as the Hunter, who is the only one to have ever succeeded in defeating Lilith. We are excited to see if it can stick the landing, as it appears to be a fresh perspective for this franchise.
Jake Solomon said in an interview that they knew from the beginning that they wanted to tell the story of the Fantastic Four. It gave us a little space to tell our own story, because we felt nobody else was at that time in the universe.
There will be 13 members of the Midnight Suns and the main character will be the Hunter. These members have something in common.
The Hunter will be the main character that you can modify. The trailer shows her in a default appearance that can be changed, but it's not clear if you'll be able to alter her gender as well. In between missions, you will take control of this person. You will be able to control the Hunter in a third-person perspective and interact with other characters.
There is a new trailer for Darkness Falls that shows Venom getting chased and attacked by Lilith. Before he can be finished off, Spider-Man shows up, a team of heroes with him including another new face, Scarlet Witch, to face off against Lilith and her goons.
The announcement didn't have any actual game play, but it did say that a trailer would be coming later. Firaxis gave us more in-depth information about the game before we got that. This isn't just an XCOM game with a skin put on it. The developers have made it clear that it is not going to be the same as XCOM.
There are no mechanics shared between XCOM and the Midnight Suns. It is turn based tactics combat where you are controlling the team, which results in you scratching the same itch because the mechanics are completely different. The fantasy is not the same as the real thing. The mechanics are not the same.
The game will still be a tactical, turn-based, squad focused game, but the differences are important to set player expectations correctly. The Hunter will lead the teams on the missions.
The fact that the game won't have a permadeath function makes sense on many levels. The second is due to the size of the team. Losing anyone would be a big blow to the story and mechanics. It wouldn't work with a superhero game where you wouldn't expect to be worried about Iron Man being killed off. Solomon said that the bad guys are afraid of you more than how XCOM works.
Each mission will allow you to pick three different heroes to join your character, and all the characters' abilities are placed in or out of the form of cards. The game will focus less on building a strong team over time and more on figuring out which heroes and cards will work best for the mission at hand.
There is a hub area called the Abbey. You as the Hunter can build relationships with all the different heroes through dialogue and even give them gifts here. Not all of the characters in Midnight Suns will get along, giving you the chance to bond with other heroes as well.
The first official footage of the movie was the showcase for Captain America. The first of many dives on Cap focused on different characters.
Cap uses his shield as both a melee weapon and a ranged option, but it is also a great defensive weapon. Cap can build up blocked damage and then dish it back out. Cap can build up a block based on how much damage he can dish out during a turn with one skill shown off. Building your team's skills to synergize will be a key strategy.
Each card costs different amounts of Heroism and can be upgraded to increase their power and offer more bonuses. Heroism costs the most Heroism to be played.
Unlike most strategy games, movement and targeting won't be grid based. If you want to use a skill or attack, you can use a target with designated AoE's. Knockback, which can be dealt with by some attacks, can also be dealt with by trying to position the enemy to your advantage, or by simply knocking them into some sort of hazard.
Passive buffs will be gained via the relationship system. Cap will start every encounter with a block at level 1 friendship and generate block each turn at level 2.
Iron Man is the next hero to get a showcase.
One of the game's new features is called "Reak" and it has a character named Iron Man. In normal combat, you play three cards and move once. Redraw allows you to discard a card and then draw a new card. If you want to use your redraw on Iron Man's cards, they have a bonus of getting buffed. Saving for Iron Man will allow you to get the additional benefits.
Iron Man covers all bases in terms of playstyle. He has cards that draw more Iron Man-specific cards as well as grant additional re-draws to improve his abilities.
One heroic we saw was called Surgical Strike, which allows you to chain together attacks on enemies. If you have a lot of Iron Man cards in your hand, you can target a lot of targets. It can be upgraded to give a chance to apply a status effect. Air Superiority doesn't have a range and can be buffed for more damage when used more than once.
Iron Man has a chest beam that is tied to his Midnight Suns card. Unleashing a massive beam in a straight line, this card also gets stronger with each reload applied to it, but it has no limit to how far it can be buffed.
If you improve your friendship with Iron Man, you can get the passive ability called I'll Handle This, which will give you an extra redraw if you play three Iron Man cards in a turn, but that can be reduced to just two if you get your relationship up to speed.
Next is your friendly neighborhood. Spider-Man brings a lot of his skills to the game.
Spider-Man has many abilities that are free to use and can hit multiple enemies at the same time. When he incorporates elements of the stage into his attacks, he will deal more damage than other heroes. Spider-Man has specific cards that can be used to get around Heroism.
15% of the Heroism spent using an environmental attack will be returned if the web crawler is able to bring the house down. If you increase your relationship, it will make your first environment attack a battle free one.
The web throw is a Spider-Man character. This move deals two times as much knockback and can be used in any direction you want. The enemies in range of that initial web and swing take some damage as well. He has a Spider in his deck. Your next Spider-Man cards are free to play and can be upgraded to give you more options.
From the looks of it, we don't think this game will feature a mode of play that's called multi-player. Co-op wouldn't make sense in this style of game, and while XCOM was able to implement a competitive mode, we don't think it would work with this cast of characters. We don't think there will be much in the way of playing with friends in the game.
