A five-year contract has been signed by Manchester United's new defender.

United paid a guaranteed 57.37m for the Argentina international, with an additional 10m in add-ons. The move will see the two of them working together again, this time at Old United.

He has signed a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, which will take him past his 30th birthday.

He said it was an honor to join the club. I'm going to push myself even harder now that I'm here.

I want to stay at Manchester United because I have been a part of successful teams in the past. There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that we can do it with the help of this manager and coaches.

I would like to thank the fans of the team for their support. I had a great time there but feel it's time to go somewhere else. I'm at the right club to do that.

The two new signings arrived at United's training base on Tuesday together.

They were interested in the Argentina player. While the prospect of playing for Mikel Arteta was appealing to him, he chose to join Manchester United.

As part of the standard solidarity payments involved in international transfers, around 2m will be split between his old clubs.

Lisandro Martinez

"Lisandro is an outstanding player who will bring further quality and experience to the squad," said John Murtough, United's football director.

He chose to join Manchester United and we are looking forward to seeing him help the team achieve their goals.

Why did Man Utd want Martinez?

Sky sports news senior reporter.

The manager wanted a left-sided centre-back who was comfortable with the ball.

Under Ten Hag, United are going to have a proactive approach, build play from the back and he wanted to have a defender who is going to be an indirect threat at set pieces.

He feels that he fits in with the rest of the group. When the team pushes up, he is comfortable defending in large spaces.

"He is going to be okay to cover ground on his own but he can bring the ball out and form part of attacks which is what Ten Hag wants." He thinks this is money well spent.

Martinez offers brains, brawn and versatility

Sky sports has a writer.

Martinez averaged more passes per 90 minutes than any other Eredivisie player, while only two players directed more passes forward.

Martinez is able to play through opposition lines but he is also able to switch the play and pick out his teammates over long distances. No player averaged more successful long passes.

MARTINEZ

He is small for a centre-back and was voted the player of the year by his peers.

He made more headed clearances than any other player and won more aerial battles than any other player, giving him a success rate of 71 percent and putting him second only to Harry Maguire among current centre-backs.

He is helped by a sound reading of the game, which is something he can expect to face more often in the premier league. He is well-known for anticipating strikers' runs and positioning himself to make tackles.

He was all the more attractive to Premier League teams because of hisVersatility and technical skills.
