GOOGLE wants to be the first place people go for discovery and planning pastimes when they search for things on the internet. Today the company announced three new features for its star navigation app, including aerial and more realistic views of 100 landmarks, more detailed cycling routes, and improved location sharing with notifications for the arrival and departure of your friends.

The company first introduced the idea of immersive views at its developer conference. Immersive views of more than 100 places in cities such as Barcelona, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo are now available on the company's website.

The company plans to apply the feature to restaurants and neighborhoods so users can check out how they look before visiting. The firm is trying to get people to use the app for place discovery.

At a conference last month, the company's senior vice president for Knowledge & Information organization said that young people are using social media to find places to eat. People can find new places to visit with a new feature on the photo sharing website.

The second feature announcement is about cyclists. The company has had turn-by-turn cycling navigation on the app for more than a decade. It will tell cyclists if they should expect heavy car traffic and helpfully what kind of road they will travel on, thanks to today's update. It will let users know if there are any obstacles in the way. This makes it easier for people to use Google Maps in less familiar areas and more unpredictable routes.

The location sharing feature, which lets you share your live location for a specified time through a URL, is being updated by the search giant. When you meet a group of friends at a restaurant, you can set the location notification for that restaurant so that your friends who are sharing location with you arrive at the destination. Users can set a notification to let them know when their friends or family are leaving.

If you keep sharing location notifications with someone, you can turn them off from the location sharing section in the Maps app and emails, according to the company.

The location sharing notification and cycling route information will be rolled out in the coming weeks in cities where cycling navigation is available.
