The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Chicago Sky 93-83 on Tuesday to win the second annual Commissioner's Cup.
The meeting between the two teams that have qualified for the playoffs has been viewed as a preview of the finals. With less than three weeks left in the regular season, the Sky are still in first place in the league and the Aces are in second.
Three players recorded double-doubles, with A'ja Wilson (17 points, 17 rebound, 6 blocks) and CandaceParker (20 points, 14 rebound) each doing so. It was Gray who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, with 19 points, 5 assists and 4 rebound.
The winner of the game was awarded $30,000, with the winner of the game taking home an additional $5,000. Each player in the championship game of the Cup will receive a bonus of $5,000 in the form of coins.
$165,000 was donated to charities by the cup.
Vegas stayed the course through Chicago's comeback effort to take care of business this time around, just like they did in June when they blew a 28-point lead.
The Sky couldn't keep up with the first 13 points of the game that the Aces scored in the first quarter. Chicago finally found a rhythm and started hitting its outside shots, with an Emma Meesseman 3 cutting the deficit to 12 in the final minute of the first half prior to the putback layup that extended Vegas' lead back to 14.
With less than 20 seconds remaining in the third, the Sky pulled within seven, but Plum's 3 to start the fourth made it a 10-point game, and the Aces held on for the victory.
The two coaches who pointed to their experience playing in the same cup overseas said that they liked the way the WNBA has adopted an in-season tournament.
Wade said before the game that he thought it was fascinating. As the tradition grows, you'll see more and more teams taking pride in it, especially when you add the charitable cause that you play for, it adds even more incentive. When it comes to playing money games, it gives you Championship experience. I think it's great.
