According to The Washington Post, the Justice Department's criminal investigation into the January 6 attack has become more focused on the conduct of former President Donald Trump.
The outlet reported that prosecutors have zeroed in on the former president's conduct after his loss to Biden, as well as the extent to which Trump was involved in his outside attorneys' efforts to substitute certified electors in states that Biden won with Trump supporters.
Two people familiar with the matter told the newspaper investigators that a grand jury inquired about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and his allies. The level to which Trump is implicated in his attorneys' fake-elector scheme has been inquired about by prosecutors.
According to The Post, investigators inquired about their knowledge of Trump's actions in interviews with two senior aides to the vice president. A grand jury heard testimony from a former chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence. Greg Jacob was deposed as well.
The Justice Department's investigation, which is separate from the House Select Committee's probe, has been closing in on Trump for months, according to The Post.
As the congressional committee's televised hearings have renewed public interest in the insurrection, the Justice Department has faced growing criticism for its slow- moving investigation.
Attorney General Garland said prosecutors have been moving quickly since the beginning.
Garland said that it's a fundamental principle of what they do as prosecutors and investigators is to do it outside of the public eye.
The federal investigation has the power to initiate criminal investigations or issue federal indictments as a result of its findings. More than 800 people have been charged by the DOJ for their involvement in the siege of the Capitol.
The United States has never had a former president charged with a crime. Garland said this week that he might indict Trump for his role in the attack.
Justice is pursued without fear or favor. Everyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding January 6 will be held accountable by the attorney general. We don't pay much attention to that.
