The Legislature of the state of Oregon Three local residents tied a man to a tree and took him into custody after he allegedly started a fire in a forested area of Oregon.
Federal, state and county authorities responded to a radio call Monday from a U.S. Bureau of Land Management employee who reported a man was walking along a gravel road and setting fires outside. Curry County Sheriff John Ward said that ground crews, aided by local residents, and three helicopter quickly got the two fires under control.
Three locals found the suspect walking on the road near the fires and took him into custody.
The suspect became very combative with the residents and had to be tied to a tree to be subdued. An ambulance crew was asked to respond due to injuries the suspect received when he fell down.
After being treated at a hospital for his injuries, Trennon Smith, 30, of Veneta, Oregon, was being held on Tuesday in the Curry County jail on charges of fire and reckless burning. He didn't say if he has an attorney. The bond was set high.
The area where the fires occurred is only accessible by the Forest Service and BLM roads. Rafters and fishermen use lodges nearby.
The quick actions that were taken to get the fires out saved lives. If the fires hadn't been contained and if they got out of control, all the residents and visitors would have had to go somewhere else.
