According to an autopsy, Eastep was shot 12 times by law enforcement officers on I-65 in Nashville.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that Eastep was shot and killed by nine officers from three agencies.

The shooting drew wide scrutiny and sparked outrage from leaders and advocates across the city. The attorney for Eastep's wife said his death was an execution.

The mobile crisis response team was not on the scene.

The investigation into the shooting is still being conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Autopsy findings

According to the autopsy, Eastep was hit by 12 bullets, two of which grazed his legs.

Eastep's back was the location of five of the bullets that hit him. When he was struck by the gunfire, Eastep fell to the ground, landing on his side with his back towards some of the officers.

According to the report, the bullets fractured a number of bones. He had a gunshot wound to the chest.

Eastep had some injuries to his body. Several injuries were noted by the medical examiner.

Eastep, who was killed by police, struggled with addiction and sought a new life in Nashville.

How the shooting unfolded

Eastep was holding a box cutter and officers were negotiating with him. Both directions of the interstate were shut down.

The Metro Nashville Police Department has released partial body camera footage of several officers. There is a helicopter overhead.

Eastep kept his hand in his pocket while holding the box cutter. The officers started shooting when Eastep pulled a metal object from his pocket.

The object was not a gun. Eastep died at the medical center.

Murphy fired the last two shots at the scene.

Murphy was stripped of his police authority pending an investigation of his actions. The department said in February that five officers were put on administrative assignment because of the shooting.

After their administrative assignments ended in February, Kidd, Pinkelton, Plancic and Williams resumed patrol duties. Murphy was back on April 12th. Reese said that Carrick had accepted a federal position before the shooting.
