Users will need to pay more to get to the promised land called the metaverse. In order to continue investing in moving the virtual reality industry forward, Meta will be increasing the price of its popular Quest 2 headset by $100.
Meta made a few overtures to its long support of the virtual reality market, including the "billions of dollars" it spent to "nurture a thriving virtual reality community." Meta had to price its virtual reality goggles at a loss-leading $299 and $399 in order to beat out competitors like the Vive. Since it was first unveiled in 2020, the system has sold close to 15 million units.
According to analysts, the Quest helped grow the market for virtual reality in the first quarter of 2022. It is clear that, for Meta, pushing its "metaverse" system meant more to it than selling hardware. Until now.
There is no word on when the price increase will take place. The Quest is still listed in both Meta's store and Amazon's store.
The manufacturing and shipping costs have increased. For a limited time, Meta said it will include a copy of Beat Saber with every device. The announcement also means that the price of the accessories will go up as well. After they sign in with their Meta account, they will be able to download Beat Saber for 14 days after their device is activated.
The Quest 2 is the best virtual reality headset for its price on the market, according to Meta. A cable is required for the HP Reverb to work. You can get the Pico Neo 3 for $699, but the Vive Focus would cost you more than a thousand dollars. The high-end Project Cambria headset that will likely be priced well above $800 is one of the models that Meta has already mentioned.
The tech giant isn't doing as well as it could. The company cut hiring. Slowing ad revenue and stagnant user growth are said to be the reasons for this struggle. According to recent reports on the company's internal messages, it's considered staff cuts and could be as high as 10%.
