As candles flickered on the long wooden dining tables under a ceiling decorated with large string lights, guests sat with glasses of sparkling wine before they heard speeches to toast the two newlyweds
The speaker at the wedding was the father of one of the two grooms.
Glenn Thompson wore a black tuxedo and black bowtie to honor his son and son-in-law. The member of Congress stood next to his wife and told the guests how happy he was to have a new member in his family. Thompson said any parent hopes and prays that their child stays healthy, finds their way, and eventually finds that one true love so that they have the chance to experience that: someone to grow old with.
When they become a part of our family, we love it. Thompson praised his son for choosing a husband.
Thompson had just voted against a bill that would codify federal protections for marriage equality. If the Supreme Court reverses itself on marriage equality, he was one of 157 House Republicans who voted against the Respect for Marriage Act.
Maddison Stone, Thompson's press secretary, told the Centre Daily Times after the vote that the bill was a "stunt" by Democrats. Stone said that the bill was an election-year stunt for Democrats who have failed to address historic inflation and out of control prices at gas pumps and grocery stores.
On Thursday, the hypocrisy of Thompson's vote prior to his son's wedding was first noted. NBC News reported that Thompson attended the event after he voted against it.
Thompson delivered a speech at the event and said it was a good experience. A guest who asked to remain anonymous gave the media of the speech to the website.
The guest said that the word should get out there after they published it. Politicians need to be exposed for who they are.
Thompson names his son and son-in-law in the audio version and transcript that is being published, but it is removed from the transcript. The two grooms are not public figures and are not being named. When reached on his honeymoon, Thompson's new son-in-law said the couple weren't sure if they wanted to speak publicly.
Stone previously confirmed to NBC and other outlets that Thompson had attended the wedding, but didn't reply to a request for comment for this story. Stone said that the congressman and his wife were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son's marriage on Friday night. The new son-in-law of the Thompsons is very excited to join the family.
States would once again have the power to refuse marriage licenses to two people of the same sex if the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell v. The bill Thompson voted against would have repealed the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 and ensured that federal benefits and protections remained in place for couples like the lawmaker's son regardless of their state of residence.
Being a part of that is something we appreciate. Hopes and dreams are what we have. We hope from the start that it is all about having a healthy child. Being healthy is what it's about. Being healthy is what it's about. We want to be safe. We hope that they find their way and find inspiration. We hope and pray that as they get older, they will find that one true love so that they can experience it. We are very grateful that you are here. As a parent, it goes past that. When they become a part of our family, we love it. We're rooting for that. We have three sons, and [REDACTED] has done a good job of adding to the family. The kids showed up through the caesarean section so it wasn't all good. The experience of having a new son in the family has been great forPenny. We just want to say thank you to everyone here because we are just blessed.
