When the news of Tom Brady's retirement broke in January, no one knew what was about to happen. The conclusion of Brady's story had a surprise ending, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner reversing his decision six weeks later to return for a 23rd season.

One of the most compelling NFL offseasons in recent memory included that development. The past several months have seen a lot of player movement, with the game's premier wide receiver and numerous top-tier QBs among those who landed on different teams. There were a lot of things happening on other fronts.

The LA Rams will host the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 8:20 p.m. in the season opener. The program is on NBC With training camps around the league opening this week, it's a good time to catch up on everything you need to know with our annual offseason review.

Brady (almost) retires

"This is difficult for me to write, but here goes" was the message Brady posted to his social channels when he announced his retirement. Maybe that was a sign of things to come.

Brady decided to return to the team in March after reversing his retirement decision. He will be the oldest player in the league when he turns 45 on August 3.

The players went through with their retirements this year. Quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Ryan Fitzpatrick, tight end Rob Gronkowski, running back Frank Gore, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, defensive end Stephon Tuitt, left tackle Andrew Whitworth and center Alex Mack are among them.

Payton steps away from Saints

President George W. Bush was in the middle of his second term when the New Orleans Saints searched for a coach. After 16 years at the helm of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton was able to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2009. He stepped down in January and said that he doesn't want to be a coach at the moment.

Sean McVay has the best winning percentage among active head coaches. He will be replaced by Dennis Allen.

In a league in which hiring up-and-coming head coaches has been all the rage, the 2022. Allen is one of five retread coaches who were hired this year. Kevin O'Connell (Minnesota Vikings), Brian Daboll (New York Giants), Nathaniel Hackett (Denver Broncos) and Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins) all got jobs after years of looking for savvy offensive coaches. The Chicago Bears hired Matt Eberflus, who was the Colts' defensive coach for the last four years.

Flores sues the NFL

Brian Flores is a former coach of the Dolphins. The Dolphins owner is accused of offering incentives for his team to lose games in order to improve their draft position, while the Giants and Broncos subjected Flores to sham interviews to comply with the Rooney Rule.

Steve Wilks and Ray Horton joined Flores' suit and made their own claims against the two teams. The Rooney Rule, which requires teams to have at least one minority offensive assistant, was re-examined by the National Football League. Three of the 10 new hires are minorities. Ron Rivera, Mike Tomlin, and Robert Saleh were also present.

Rodgers commits to Green Bay

After a lot of confusion, Rodgers decided to stay at home. The All-Pro Green Bay Packers quarterback gave teams around the league some hope that he could be acquired in a trade. Rodgers agreed to a three-year deal with the Packers that could make him $150 million over the next three years.

This would have been Rodgers' last season under the previous contract, since he agreed to a reworked deal in 2021.

WR market turned on its head

It wasn't enough for Rodgers to come back to Green Bay. Davante Adams signed a five-year contract with the Raiders after declining the Packers' contract offers.

Adams and Carr have maintained a close relationship throughout Carr's career. It completely changed the wide receiver market. That had implications in other places.

The Kansas City Chiefs were close to a deal with Tyreek Hill. They were not. Adams priced Hill out of Kansas City. The team allowed him to seek a trade partner, and he was able to find one in the Dolphins, who gave him a record-breaking contract. The Philadelphia Eagles signed A.J. Brown to a four-year deal worth $100 million after acquiring him in a draft day trade.

The Rams' Cooper Kupp agreed to a three-year extension of $80 million, pushing his current deal to five years. There was a heavy draft due to the market resetting. For the third year in a row, at least five receiver were taken in the first round of the draft.

Defense dominates the draft

The defensive players went off the board early in the draft. The top five picks in the draft were all defensive players, the first time that's happened in 25 years. The Texans,Jets, andGiants have players. Since 2006 there have been four defensive players taken No. 1 overall.

The quarterbacks were not included in the draft. There was only one selected in the first round. Three quarterbacks were taken off the board in the third round.

Two New York teams have two picks each in the top 10, which is one of the big storylines of the draft. The Giants took offensive tackle Evan Neal, while the Jets added a receiver, a pass-rusher, and a fourth-round pick.

End of an era in Seattle

The Broncos were interested in trading for Rodgers, but they instead traded for Russell Wilson on the same day Rodgers decided to stay with the Packers. The team said goodbye to a great player in the process.

Denver solidified its most important position after years of instability at quarterback by acquiring Manning in a similar fashion. The Broncos became one of the favorites in the conference. They can win their own division. The AFC West has arguably the best QB collection of any division.

The in-division competition was further intensified by other moves, such as the Raiders acquiring Adams and signing pass-rusher.

Watson's trade, ongoing lawsuits

After sitting out all of the 2021 season with the Texans, Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson was traded to the ClevelandBrowns while facing 24 civil lawsuits accusing him of inappropriate behavior and sexual assault during massage sessions. The 25th lawsuit was dropped after the judge ruled the petition had to be amended to include the person who filed it. The $230 million in guaranteed money from Cleveland was a new record.

In Texas, grand juries declined to indictWatson on criminal charges. There were 24 civil lawsuits. The lawsuits could go to trial next spring. The NFL's own investigation concluded recently and a decision is expected soon.

Colts swap QBs ... again

The quarterback landscape was impacted by the courting ofWatson. Overtures from the Atlanta Falcons helped clarify Matt Ryan's future and convinced him to ask for a trade. He was dealt by the Falcons to the Colts for a third-round pick.

You can win up to $10,000 if you pick the win totals for all the teams.

The Colts have a long running quarterback problem. The goal was to stop the revolving door of quarterbacks in the franchise. They returned to the quarterback market one year later.

The Colts agreed to the Ryan deal after trading Wentz to the Commanders. The Colts have had five different quarterbacks start the season in the past five years. His career is at a crossroads. Is it possible that he resurrects it in Washington?

Mayfield's Cleveland run ends

The Baker Mayfield era in Cleveland came to an end this month. The top pick in the draft was traded from the Cleveland to the Carolinas. The compensation could go as high as a fourth-round choice.

The deal has set up a unique situation in Carolina, where the first and third picks of the upcoming draft are in the same year. The two prospects flamed out with their teams and are trying to get back on track. There is an all-or-nothing nature to the drafting of quarterbacks in the NFL.

Jackson's contract situation

One of the more interesting contract situations for the 32nd pick of the 2018? If you embrace the team's version of the story, you may be able to view Lamar Jackson's contract status in a different way. The Ravens are willing to negotiate a new contract with Jackson, who is entering the final season of his first career contract.

Jackson is still on his original contract even though he doesn't have an agent. This could become a season long distraction if the sides don't reach a deal before the season starts.

The new contract affects Lamar Jackson.

Kyler Murray agreed to a five-year, $230.5 million extension this month, ending speculation and his agent's statement that said, "actions speak louder than words in this volatile business." The Rams made defensive tackle Donald the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history with a contract that averages $32 million annually and puts to rest any doubts about Donald's possible retirement.

Big money in free agency

The free agency period that followed a decline in the league's salary cap was subdued. We don't, neither do we. The National Football League had a free agency bonanza in 2022, with teams showing a willingness to dole out huge contracts.

Von Miller signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Bills. The offensive tackle received $75 million from the Dolphins. Cornerback J.C. Jackson and receiver Christian Kirk each signed contracts worth at least $70 million.

Some of the players who were franchised had mixed results. Both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs have yet to sign their contracts. The remaining four franchised players signed new contracts after signing their tender.

Players flexed their power

NBA and MLB players have more power than the NFL players. There were examples of players using their power to get what they wanted.

They chose their respective trade destinations using their no-trade clauses. Hill agreed to terms with Miami after negotiating with the Jets and Dolphins. Adams had a similar situation. Some star players have more juice than others. Those who did show they are not afraid to use it.

Washington's scandal deepens

The congressional committee was involved in the aftermath of the Commanders' workplace malfeasance investigation. The team's workplace culture was under investigation by Congress.

According to a 29-page committee report, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform determined that a "shadow investigation" was conducted by the owner of the football team. The commissioner was compelled to testify before the committee last month. He is scheduled to testify on July 28.

Playoff OT format changed

A rule has been passed that will ensure at least one possession for both teams in overtime in the playoffs.

After winning the overtime coin toss, the Chiefs scored on the first possession and went on to win the game. The result caused a lot of debate. The rule only applies to playoffs.

Niners' unresolved issues

There has been a lot of talk about a potential trade of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the contract dispute with receiver Deebo Samuel. Neither has been solved yet.

The 49ers were expected to trade Garoppolo months ago, but his shoulder surgery and the quarterback movement elsewhere in the league have negatively impacted his market. San Francisco is expected to have a first-round pick under center this year. Samuel missed voluntary workouts in May and June before attending the team's mandatory mini camp.

What else?
