The creator of the chocolate- and nut-topped ice cream snack confirmed this week that it would be discontinued.
The discontinuation of the Choco taco along with several other ice cream products was confirmed on Monday on the website and in response to a number of disappointed questions from fans on social media.
One of the responses said that the Klondike choco taco had been discontinued. We have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio after experiencing an unprecedented spike in demand. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment.
It tasted like summer or childhood to many of the fans, even if they hadn't had one in years. The most beloved and innovative of all the American ice cream 'novelties' was created by Alan Drazen in Philadelphia in 1983, and it was in its own way inventive.
Mr. Drazen said that when you eat a sugar cone, you usually eat nuts, chocolate, and ice cream on the top, and then you only eat ice cream and cone. The ice cream, cone, nuts and chocolate with just about every bite is what you get with the choco taco.
Lovers of the summer treat had been confused by the company's confirmation. There were rumors throughout the year that the choco taco was no longer available in stores. Fans were reassured on several occasions that single serving of the choco taco would be available in all the usual places.
The confirmation of its demise was reported by the Takeout.
On Monday, Snopes published an article saying the discontinuation of the choco taco was false, but just hours later, they reversed course.
We labeled the rumorFalse because we didn't want to believe that it was true.
There were people hoping that it could find a way to come back.
Some small hope was offered to the writers at Snopes, Mr. Ohanian and other fans by Klondike in one of its responses.
We are trying to find a way to bring choco taco back to ice cream trucks in the near future.
