Bill Belichick said he's observed "dramatic improvement" from quarterback Mac Jones.

On the eve of the first official practice of training camp, the coach said that he had made tremendous strides.

He did a good job last year, but he's starting from a higher point this year. I think everyone knows how well he prepares and how far along he is compared to a year ago.

Jones has seen dramatic improvement in his physical work and conditioning, mechanics, footwork, understanding of our offense and opponent defenses, as a result of his work ethic and dedication.

The majority of his teammates will have a conditioning test on Tuesday, so Jones has had a head start.

At this time last year, Jones was competing with CamNewton for the starting position. Jones started all 17 games and helped the Pats to a 14-7 record and a wild-card playoff spot.

He passed for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdown in his first year.

"We're just a little bit further ahead in the conversation than we are right now," he said. Mac has done it before when we talk about plays. He can say, "Are we going to do this on that?" Is this going to be done on another thing? Is it a good idea to split them a bit wider? Separating them a bit tighter. There are suggestions like that.

We have a better idea of what he can do and how to play into it. He's aware of himself as well. He knows what he's good at. We would like to feature those.

The coaches playing a significant role in doing that remain a notable storyline after Josh McDaniels left to be the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders New York Giants head coach Joe Judge and former Detroit Lions head coach MattPatricia were both involved in the spring practices of the Pats.

"I think I've said it many times, Matt and Joe are two outstanding coaches," he said. They're very good, exceptional at the whole range. We have both of them.

"We're not really big on titles and all that," said the coach. We need to work together and make a good final product. We're trying to do that. We have always done that.

Ultimately, it will become clear which coach calls offensive plays, but when it's important to make that official, it won't be an issue.

He said he's a head coach. I'm responsible for a lot of things. Leave it at that
