Do you like plants? It might be a surprise that flower power attracts millions of travelers to botanical gardens each year, with the most famous of them attracting more than a million visitors each.

How do you make a great garden? Luis Barragn said it must combine the poetic and the mysterious with a feeling of peace and joy. For travelers, a sense of place and culture is important, as well as accurate labels and spectacular rarities, which would be added to the list.

New ways to generate buzz are found in the botanical gardens that thrive today. Some of the most spectacular are sure to please anthologists and soon-to-be-converts alike.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa

The National Botanical Garden is located next to a national park. Less than 10% of the garden is cultivated and the rest is wild. This area protects the indigenous fauna and South Africa's unique fynbos, a scrubby vegetation typified by members of the heath family. There are two routes up Table Mountain for the more adventurous. There is a bust of Nelson Mandela in the garden, as well as a range of African stone sculptures and life-sized dinosaurs.

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

What do you think about the future of green building? It could be similar to Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, which is futuristic and green. The gardens cost a cool $1 billion and include a Flower Dome replicating dry Mediterranean climates, a Cloud Forest with a thundering waterfall, and a water park for the kids. The National Orchid Garden is just five miles away from the historic Singapore Botanic Gardens.

The beaches of Singapore are important.

Kew Gardens, London, England

History, diversity, rare plants, glasshouses, clear signs, active scholarship and education, landscaping, and attractions for visitors that don't know their name are just some of the things that make a great botanical garden. Just a short train ride from central London is a peaceful, leafy paradise that can take days to explore fully. The world's largest Victorian glasshouse, the 200m-long, 18m-high treetop walkway, and the multisensory sculpture, The Hive, are all available to visit. The woods will be carpeted with bluebells in the spring.

You can take a short break from London by train.

Butchart Gardens, Vancouver Island, Canada

Butchart Gardens was a quarry pit for a cement plant before it became a park. The Sunken Garden is one of the most popular attractions on the island and was created by the owner after the limestone deposits had run out. The gardens are well known for their rose collection, the fall colors from the Japanese maple garden, and as a place for a fancy afternoon tea. If you happen to have a seaplane, butchart's waterfront location gives you the option of arriving by boat, which is both scenic and practical.

Saihō-ji, Kyoto, Japan

Like other gardens in Japan, you can expect bright leaves falling from maples in autumn, and tall stands of swaying bamboo, but the gardens at Saih-ji are famed for something smaller. The moss Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has over 120 species of moss. The way to appreciate this garden is to take in the subtle changes in green, the varied texture, and the way nature and human landscaping have achieved harmony over hundreds of years. Saih-ji strictly limits the number of visitors to maintain the religious atmosphere of the temple, and visitors must get a reservation at least three weeks in advance.

Isola Madre, Alpine Lake Maggiore, Italy

A great garden is dependent on location. Isola Madre is one of the Borromean Islands and is located in Italy. The garden surrounds a 16th- to 18th-century palazzo. There is a frightening collection of puppets inside the dollhouse. The best place to stay is outside with the white peacocks. One of the most fanciful palazzos in Italy can be seen on a combined ferry ticket.
