Jim Harbaugh: Abortion 'needs to be talked about' (2:18)

Harbaugh talked about his views on abortion. There is a time and a place for it.

At a pro-life event in Michigan last week, Harbaugh said that if someone in his family were to get pregnant, he would raise that baby.

Harbaugh told Gene that he had told them the same thing he had said during the team's summer tour of the state. I encourage them to go ahead and have a baby if they didn't plan it. If you don't have the means or the ability to care for that unborn child, then Sarah and I will take it.

Sarah spoke at the right to life event in Michigan.

In the last few years, Jim Harbaugh has taken a stance on social issues. He made anHonorary captain at the University of Michigan's spring game and voiced his support for Colin Kapernick, who he coached with the 49ers. He attended an anti- police brutality march a week after the killing of George Floyd and spoke out after the murder.

Harbaugh said at the event last week that he believed in having the courage to let the unborn be born. I enjoy life." I believe in caring for and respecting life and death. Beliefs in faith and science are what drives me.

Harbaugh is a catholic. A visit to the Vatican was one of the highlights of his team's trip to Italy.

Harbaugh said that his priorities were faith, family, and football. The abortion issue is so large that it needs to be discussed. There needs to be a serious discussion. Do you agree? I don't know what to think. What are people's thoughts?

He said the issue was a life or death one. I respect people's views. Let them be heard. There's passion on both sides of the issue, so let's talk about them. The best results come from combining that with respect. I think it's really important that I contribute to that conversation and that communication.

On June 24, 1973, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of abortion rights. Mary Sue Coleman, Harbaugh's boss at the University of Michigan, said at the time that she supported access to abortion services and would do everything in her power to make sure they continued.

Michigan has a 1931 law banning abortion unless it is necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman. When abortion was legalized in 1973, the law was not repealed. The lawsuit has been filed by the governor.

Harbaugh said, "Any player on our team, any female staff member or any staff member or anyone in our family or our extended family, that doesn't feel like after they have a baby they can take care of it." That baby will be raised by us.
