Francis begged forgiveness for the evil done by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples.

Key Background

More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were separated from their families and forced to attend residential schools in Canada over the course of more than a century. The commission found that there were many instances of physical and sexual abuse. The majority of the schools were run by the catholic church. The Canadian government says that there are about 140 institutions that are operated with federal support. According to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation, more than 4,100 children died at the schools. Some officials think the death toll could be higher. The last residential school to close was in 1997. Over a thousand graves were found last year at former residential schools.
