Matthew Tkachuk opens up about trade to Panthers (2:36)

Matthew Tkachuk signed a long term deal with the Florida panthers. There is a time and a place for it.

For the first six years of his NHL career, Matthew Tkachuk waged the Battle ofAlberta.

Tkachuk, who was traded by the Flames to the panthers in a blockbuster deal on Friday night, said that he hates the Bolts more now.

At a news conference on Monday, Tkachuk was introduced by the panthers after signing an eight-year contract extension. In exchange for the forward, Florida got a fourth-round pick and a lottery-protected first-round pick.

Two of the past three Stanley Cup titles have been won by the Lightning, and they have eliminated the Panthers from the playoffs in two of the last three years.

Tkachuk is excited for those games. The team to beat is them. I'm excited for that challenge because it seems like we're going to have to go through them eventually. They knew what it took to win.

He moved from a hockey-mad city to a market that has room for growth. He believes his personality could become a selling point for the team.

I bring a certain swagger to this team. Tkachuck said that he has the same personality off ice. I'm looking forward to growing the game down here. I hope that in a few years, no one on the team can walk outside without someone saying something to them. I have faith in myself. It isn't a cockiness. Some of the teams in the conference have been successful. There is a team on the other side of the state.

"Don't take that too seriously" was the warning given by the general manager to his newest player and the character from the movie "Hoosiers".

He said at the end of the film that he would make the shot. That type of confidence is what it is. Don't let the ball go to waste. He wants to get the shot.

The trade for Tkachuk happened last week, when the player's agent reached out to express his willingness to sign a long-term contract in South Florida. The Flames sought a trade for the restricted free agent forward because he refused to do so inCalgary. It meant that the Flames would lose both of their leading scorers this summer, as well as Johnny Gaudreau, who signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on the first day of free agency.

Weegar and Huberdeau will be unrestricted free agents next year. He was the leading scorer last season and perhaps the franchise's biggest star, so the split with him was shocking.

You have to give. It was a situation that happened in a very short period of time. You have to keep going when you have an opportunity like this.

The trade was not related to any contract talks.

The price for a player like Matthew is very high. He said that things went down in that way.

Tkachuk doesn't see himself as a replacement for Huberdeau. Tkachuk said that he's a different kind of player. I don't feel like I have to do anything. I want to win. Personal data can be thrown out. I will be the last one standing. I don't compare myself to anyone.
