A way to read while away the journey is an essential packing list item. Independent bookstores are often well-stocked and well-curated. To find out which shops are worth a detour for book lovers, we asked 11 best-selling writers.

Left Bank Books – St. Louis, Missouri

The author of You Think It, I'll Say It recommended it.

Do you want to own a Black Lives Matter sign? Would you like to send a birthday card to your mother? Do you want to pet the cat in the house? Would you like to read the latest novels, stories, and works of nonfiction? Left Bank Books has all of this and more.

Left Bank is located in the Central West End neighborhood and is a great place to find books. When someone asks how to get an autograph from me, I tell them to order it from Left Bank and I will come by. I stop in to sign the book and purchase several volumes of fiction because they all look so irresistible on the shelves and tables and are displayed in the light from those big windows.

The Writer's Block – Las Vegas, Nevada

The author of An American Marriage recommended it.

The words that people use to describe bookstores apply to The Writers Block. The smell of a new book is more heady than the smell of a new car. The bookshop is a part of the old school. Most of the time, the owners are on the floor ready to sell their new favorites as well as classics.

This bookstore is special because of its location. The natural beauty of the Red Rock Canyon is amplified by its close proximity to the Las Vegas Strip. The same is true for the writers block. The bookstore is located in downtown Las Vegas and is a great place to find books. It has clean lines and light. The store has a sanctuary for birds.

Liberty Bay Books – Poulsbo, Washington

The author of The Great Alone is recommended by this person.

It's like asking a mother to choose among her children. There is a shop in a small coastal town in Washington State that I will always remember. We all imagine visiting Liberty Bay Books, which is located in beautiful downtown Poulsbo.

There are bookshelves full of books for everyone. There's a place to get a cup of coffee, but it's not the most important thing; it's the love of books that makes us friends from the moment we step inside.

Books & Books – Miami, Florida

Brad Meltzer is an author.

I have only been to Books & Books in Coral Gables for every book I have written. I have been to stores all over the globe. This is the store that I like the most. I call it my home. There is an outdoor courtyard with live music on the weekends. Mitchell Kaplan is the main man of bookselling.

Is Miami a good place to read? It is absolutely true that not. Plastic surgery and tanning beds are what people think of us for. All our intellectuals are brought into one cozy space by books and books. Everyone from Bill Clinton to Neil Gaiman has a reason. Stay and listen to the free music. I will thank you.

Mystery Loves Company – Oxford, Maryland

Laura Lippman is an author.

I recommend Mystery Loves Company because I am a hometown loyalist. Kathy Harig moved the store to the Eastern Shore several years ago. Kathy has a very generous definition of mystery and the store has titles that will make anyone happy.

The cats are named Nick and Nora. Don't even think of trying to get there on Friday afternoons, unless you really, really like traffic. You can buy some tomatoes or corn at the local produce stands. Not to be a hometown loyalist but they are the best.

Second Flight Books – Lafayette, Indiana

Terese Mailhot is an author.

I like second flight books. Laura and Justin are part of the community. Laura is a good friend of mine as a bookseller. In February, in the very front of the store, there was a full and beautiful aisle of romance novels. I think that's wonderful. They mostly sell used books because they worry about affordability. People who believe in the power of books are the ones who sell me. Every time I walk into that building, I get excited.

Kepler's Books – Menlo Park, California

The author of the summoner series recommends it.

Most of the time, the most special bookstores are described as small, cozy and warm, with the smell of old books in the air. This is not a book by the same author. It's special for something else. The broad corridors within the store are lined with new books and the store is filled with California sunlight. All comers are welcomed by the double doors out front, which are open all the time. You can find it as close to an outdoor bookstore as you can get. It's a great place to give it a visit.

WORD Books – Greenpoint, Brooklyn

The Stone Sky is a recommended book.

I like WORD books in Greenpoint the most. It's small and cramped, but they always have at least one book that I need to buy. The launch party for The Fifth Season was held there and it was lovely. There was a lot of room for a volcano. Talks and readings are included. It is on a beautiful street with historic architecture and a small park. They don't have a bookstore cat. Bookstores don't do those anymore. It's allergies. It's great except for that.

Powell's Books – Portland, Oregon

Vera Brosgol is the author of be prepared.

Powell's is the granddaddy of Portland's independent bookstores and is dedicated to children's books. There are 1.6 acres of books in the city block. Each room has a different genre. The Rose Room is where all the children's books are kept and where I go to see them when I visit.

You can find out-of-print treasures and cheap copies of classics when you look at the used books. I like to look at the weird illustrated covers of old sci-fi paperbacks in the Gold Room. There is a great place to sit and watch people. It helps keep you out of the rain.

Tomi Adeyemi is the author of children of blood and bone.

I know of a bookstore that is not boring. They put on my event even though there was a state of emergency. I think they are the best bookstores in the world. You walk into the store and want to purchase everything. You own books. Don't be foolish!

Mysterious Galaxy – San Diego, California

Christie Ridgway is an author.

Visitors to San Diego come for the sunshine and stay for the near- perfect weather, but if you need to dive indoors to give your sunburn a break, there's a great independent bookstore. If you're looking for a science fiction pick or closer to home if you're looking for a domestic thrillers pick, MysteriousGalaxy is a good place to start. There are many genres represented, including fantasy and horror.
