It's shaping up to be a great summer for Berlin Airport when it comes to flights to the United States.

United launching daily Washington to Berlin flights

The flights between Washington and Berlin will be launched by United on May 25,23. During the summer season, the new flight will operate every day.

The flight from Washington to Berlin arrives at 8:20AM.

The Berlin to Washington flight arrives at 2:30PM.

There is a block on the 4,203-mile flight. The route will be used by United. New Polaris seats and Premium Plus cabins are expected to be added to all United 757s by the summer of 2023, so this will likely be updated over time.

United has been flying between Newark and Berlin for a long time. This will be the first time that the capitals of the United States and Germany will be connected with a single flight.

This route was supposed to be launched in 2022, but it has been pushed back by a year. It is hoped that it will launch in 2023.

Berlin is finally getting lots of transatlantic service

Despite being Germany's most populous city, there has been no consistent service to the airport from the US. Why has Berlin not been able to maintain long haul connections? A number of factors have contributed to this.

  • The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport finally opened in late 2020, nearly a decade behind schedule; the old airport wasn’t really equipped for major expansion
  • Unfortunately airberlin liquidated in late 2017, and that’s the airline that operated some long haul routes out of Berlin
  • While Berlin is the biggest city in Germany, Frankfurt and Munich are the business hubs, and also the hubs that Lufthansa has been focused on
  • That means Berlin is largely left with leisure demand (which isn’t going to consistently be lucrative, especially for full service airlines) and government traffic (which is likely to fly with Lufthansa, even if connecting is required)

There is so much to see and do in Berlin. The way I see it is that it is a city that has been screwed by its airport setup in terms of access to the internet.

Things are looking up for Berlin when it comes to trans-Atlantic flights. There are also new Washington to Berlin routes.

  • Delta is launching a daily seasonal New York to Berlin route as of May 2023
  • Norse Atlantic is launching a daily New York to Berlin route as of August 2022; as of now this flight is scheduled through the end of the winter schedule, in late March 2023
  • Norse Atlantic is launching a 3x weekly Los Angeles to Berlin route as of August 2022; as of now this flight is scheduled through the end of the winter schedule, in late March 2023

Berlin is doing well with air service. Three airlines will fly to New York from the airport in the near future.

Norse Atlantic is also adding Berlin flights

Bottom line

There will be daily flights between Washington and Berlin in the summer of 2023. This will be the first time that the two capital cities are connected by United.

I am happy to see that Berlin is getting more services. I want to know if this growth reflects demand or is unsustainable.

What do you think about the Washington to Berlin route.
