The executions of four pro-democracy activists, including a former lawmaker, could lead to more international sanctions against the military regime which seized power in a coup a year ago.
The executions were announced by state-run media which accused the activists of being involved in terrorist killings.
All four men were sentenced by the country's "fair" judicial system.
The allegations were politically motivated due to the peoples opposition to the military regime.
One of the four people executed was a former hip-hop artist who went on to become a lawmaker.
The men were put to death by hanging.
In an official statement, the UN Special Rapporteur for Myanmar said that he was "outraged and devastated" at the news of the executions. The international community is going to take strong action if the junta doesn't do more.
There are 2,109. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) says that since the military junta took power in a coup last year, there have been at least 27 deaths of civilians. More than 15,000 people have been arrested by the military.
In April, a military court sentenced the former leader of the country to five years in prison on corruption charges, in a hearing that was seen as a politically motivated show trial. Before she was sentenced for six years in a separate case, she had already been sentenced. If she is found guilty in any of the cases brought against her, she could be sentenced to more than 100 years in jail. After the country's 2020 general elections, the military took power in a coup. The military has not been able to consolidate power in the country because of global sanctions and protests.
