Shops in France will be required to close their doors when using air conditioning and neon lighting in order to cut energy waste.

The Minister of Ecological Transition told the Journal du Dimanche that these rules would be rolled out across France.

The cost of energy in Europe has gone up since the Russian invasion.

The air-conditioning rule requires shops to keep their air-conditioning running.

Ms Pannier-Runacher said leaving doors open when air conditioning is on is absurd.

She told the Journal du Dimanche that she would issue a couple of decrees on energy waste.

She said that the ban on illuminated advertising would be widened between 01:00 and 10:00.

Shops will not be allowed to have their doors open while the air conditioning and heating is malfunctioning.

Neon signs are not allowed in areas with a population under 800,000. The airports and stations are not included in this exemption.

Energy rationing can't be ruled out in the EU as the region struggles to cope with gas supplies from Russia.

Demand for air conditioning continues to increase in France.
