A man is dead and a police officer is hospitalized after a violent confrontation near Houston.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said that officers with the Missouri City Police Department spotted a vehicle that had been involved in a robbery. The suspect behind the wheel was accused of carjacking someone the day before.

Missouri City is close to downtown Houston.

The officers followed the vehicle after it pulled out of the gas station. Houston police were called for back up.

The suspect ran after stopping the car on the block. Crystal Sepulveda, a police officer, was hit in the face by a bullet during the police chase.

The area was surrounded by multiple agencies that began searching for the suspect. The suspect was in the backyard. Finner said that he was shot multiple times by police.

The suspect died at the hospital. The suspect was between the ages of 25 and 30.

Sepulveda was hospitalized in stable condition as of July 23, according to officials.

The MCPD wrote that their sister is a fighter and will survive her injuries. The road to recovery is long for her and her family.
