Despite giving away shares worth more than $6 billion, Bill Gates is still the fifth richest person in the world.

Gates donated stock in Canadian National Railway Co to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Microsoft co- founder gave away more than a billion dollars worth of Deere shares to the foundation.

More than 3 million shares were moved from Gates' investment vehicle to a non profit organization.

Bill Gates is now worth $112 billion, making him the fifth wealthiest person in the world.

The philanthropist plans to give away all of his wealth in the future, after he pledges to give $20 billion to the charity this month.

Gates said last week that he would move down from the list of the world's richest people.

The foundation said earlier this month that it would increase its donations to $9 billion by the end of the decade.

According to the foundation's website, the recent pledge and donations take the foundation's endowment to over 70 billion dollars.

Gates said last week that he has an obligation to return his resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact. I hope that other people in positions of great wealth and privilege will follow suit.
