The editorial board of the Wall Street Journal criticized the former president for not taking action on Jan. 6, 2021.
Mr. Trump took an oath to defend the Constitution and he had a duty to protect the Capitol from a mob. He didn't want to. The military was not called to help. He didn't call the VP to make sure he was okay. The editorial board said that he fed the mob's anger and allowed the riot to play out.
The character of Mr. Pence was revealed during his trial. The board said that Mr. Trump failed.
One day after the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot held its final summer hearing, which focused on the 187 minutes between Trump finishing his remarks at his "Stop the Steal" rally in January, the Journal published an editorial.
The committee used videotaped depositions from officials like former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and in-person testimony from Trump White House officials Sarah Matthews and Matthew Pottinger to accuse the former president of failing to stop the violence.
During the hearing, a member of the committee said that President Trump didn't fail to act after leaving the Ellipse. He did not take action.
The editorial board of the Journal said that it did not agree with the committee on all fronts of the investigation, and that it was trying to make a criminal case that might be hard to prove.
The editorial board acknowledged that the facts it is laying out in hearings are sobering, as it condemned Trump's lack of action on the day of the riot.
The New York Post offered strong words against the president in an editorial on Friday.
It is up to the Justice Department to make a decision. As a matter of principle, as a matter of character, Trump has shown that he is not worthy to be the next president of the United States.
