Downed power lines and faulty electric transformers may soon be a thing of the past if Cali-based startup EarthGrid has its way.

New Atlas explained the company's patent-pending process on Thursday and said the robot it's developing can dig underground tunnels as much as 100 times faster than the competition.

Troy Helming said in a video that he imagined a robot with ten light sabers on the front.

The back end of the bot is capable of spitting out small pieces of rock. New Atlas said that the bot can complete jobs without stopping if necessary because it can bore through the ground.

Power Trip

EarthGrid wants to use its technology to create an underground network of tunnels that will serve the US with renewable energy.

The people of New York City learned a lot about protecting infrastructure from the elements after the great storm of 1888. The storm dumped a lot of snow on the city and caused a bunch of power lines to fall. Underground wires gave more electric stability.

EarthGrid has a long way to go, but we hope they figure it out soon. The country's electric infrastructure is in need of some help.
