Charles Leclerc beat title rival Max Verstappen to pole position at the French Grand Prix with the help of his team mates.

After Sainz gave him a slipstream on both laps in the final session, Leclerc overtook Verstappen.

The slipstream tactics were nailed on the second try.

Red Bull'sSergio Perez was third.

A trio of British drivers were led by the seven-time champion.

Sainz and Kevin Magnussen started from the back and finished in the top 10.

Sainz will start from the back of the grid because of a series of penalties for excessive engine usage, so Ferrari was able to use him to help Leclerc get pole.

The slipstream tactic didn't work very well at the first try.

The car's pace in the corners of the final sector stretched him further ahead, allowing Leclerc to be more than 0.2 seconds quicker through the middle sector than on his previous lap.

Red Bull appeared to have an advantage in practice, but Leclerc was surprised by how quickly Ferrari were.

He said it was a great lap as he won his seventh pole of the year. I had a hard time putting a lap together over the weekend. It would have been a lot closer if Carlos hadn't been there.

Red Bull have an advantage on the straights going into the race.

Verstappen said that they were lacking a bit in the qualification portion. We have a decent race car, but it was a bit more difficult than I expected.

Tomorrow will help us. We can use our speed on the straights.

There is more to come.
