At this early stage of the campaign, it's become an epic game of 3-way geriatric chicken.

In the other corner is Joe Biden, who insists he's running for reelection even though he's the oldest president in history.

The senator is in a different area. If Biden doesn't run, the top political advisor for the 80 year old socialist will make a third attempt to win the White House.

Donald Trump is the largest wild card of them all. The man who used to be the oldest president in US history, at 76 years old, seems intent on getting his old job back for the power and prestige, as well as possibly even pardon himself, should it come to that.

There are no exclusive claims to a spot on the primary ballot.

Right now, each of those three men holds an outsized sway over their party's leadership apparatus in what could be an otherwise wide open presidential campaign.

The power vacuum created by the three has never been seen in US history. The case is that Trump and Biden have the most say.

"Maybe they can have a meeting and shake hands and agree that neither would run," Trent Lott, the former Senate GOP leader, said in an interview.

That is a growing opinion.

According to McConnell, there would be a crowded field for the GOP in the 20th century. If Trump, Biden, and sanders don't get out of the way, everyone else on the bench may need to wait even longer to get their own path to the White House.

Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox thinks it's time to look at some new candidates.

When the parties can't put up candidates in their 40s, 50s, and maybe in their 60s, they have to resort to people in their 70s and 80s. The growth of democracy is stunted by it. You lose a lot of time on that type of strategy.

The sole candidate who can beat Trump?

In order to win the presidency, Biden made the argument that he was the only one of the Democrats who could beat Trump.

It's an argument he's ready to try to make again as Trump flirts with another run, even if there are now many new headwinds including his own abysmal public approval rating, soaring inflation, and angst from inside the party that Democrats failed to deliver on an ever growing list of

Until Biden makes his own formal declaration of his intentions, it's also the case that there's no change in the holding pattern of the 2020 ambitions.

Biden sought to portray himself as a youthful commander-in-chief after spending a lot of time in his basement.

That didn't always work out. Conservatives highlight his mistakes as evidence that he is mentally decliner. Biden fell from his bike during a ride. After a long trip through the Middle East, Biden came back to Washington with a gift.

In 2029, Biden will complete a second term. The White House does not want to discuss it.

"That is not a question that we should be asking," the White House press secretary said in June.

Biden snapped at a reporter when he was asked if he should skip a second term because of public opinion polling.

The president said that they wanted him to run. Don't forget to read the poll." You need to read the polls. All of you are the same. The poll showed that the majority of Democrats would vote for me.

Neither Trump nor Huckabee are interested in discussing age.

Ahead of the funeral for his ex-wife, Ivana, Donald Trump told a New York Post gossip columnist that he was not old.

A memo written by a top political advisor described a scenario in which he would jump in if Biden didn't run.

When asked about the age of America's overall leadership, the issue was not age. The economic and political life of the country is controlled by a small group of billionaires.

'George McGovern syndrome'

All three men are well into their retirements but are still engaged. According to experts, ego is a major factor for both Biden and Trump.

They think they know how to get to the White House because they made it there. It's difficult to let go of power once you have it.

Biden's awareness of history is one of the reasons he wants to stay in office. He has a fear that if Democrats nominated a more liberal candidate, they would give the Republicans a better chance of winning.

According to Brinkley, the problem with the Democratic party is George McGovern syndrome. McGovern won all but one state, Massachusetts. Biden was first elected to the US Senate when he was 29 years old.

As a result of this history, Democratic brass are likely to continue to coalesce against the likes of Sanders as a party standard bearer.

Mark Longabaugh worked on both the 2016 and 2020 campaigns of Hillary Clinton. It will be easier for Biden to stay around if the ex-president enters the race.

"I think Trump is at the center of the decision because of the way Biden and his supporters have positioned him as the only one to beat Trump," he said.

Longabaugh isn't sure if any of them will enter the primaries.

There is a lot of doubt on whether or not they will square off again in 2024. I can be wrong and we have a general election. I see more play on the field than I think.

Cox said he hopes the view plays out.

He said a lot can change over the course of a year. "I'm hoping that there are governors on both sides of the aisle, other candidates who are willing to step up and challenge the status quo that are going to say, 'Hey, look, for the good of our country, we're not going to stand aside and we need

The Democratic bench could include the vice president, governor of California, transportation secretary, and governor of Illinois.

Potential Republican challengers for 2024 include well-known names such as former Vice President Mike Pence.

It's important for new people to assume leadership at the highest levels of government according to the former Senate GOP leader.

He spent his entire career in politics until he was 67.

Lott, who left public office to work as a lobbyist, said that you have to know when to hold and when to fold.
