  • During his primary campaign, Madison Cawthorn spent money intended for his general campaign.

  • Cawthorn's campaign can't return donations according to an anonymous source.

  • Cawthorn's use of funds was called out by the source.

An anonymous source told the Daily Beast that Madison Cawthorn may be in violation of campaign laws due to the outrageous spending of campaign funds.

The North Carolina GOP Representative's campaign had so little money that they were forced to use general fund money during the primary.

The election laws don't allow for those funds to be spent before the election. If a candidate loses their primary, they have to give it back to donors.

On May 17th, Cawthorn lost his primary to ChuckEdwards.

The campaign source told the Daily Beast that Cawthorn's campaign spent "egregiously" at places like Papa's Beer, as well as at places like Chick-Fil-A.

Cawthorn's campaign spending is not known to the public because the campaign is late with its FEC filing, according to a source. The FEC says the deadline is July 15.

Cawthorn's campaign was already operating at a deficit with $324,566 in debts compared to $137,598 of cash on hand according to his latest filing.

The data from the FEC shows that by the end of April Cawthorn had spent almost all of the money raised.

The source said there wasn't any money. It was Dollar-in, Dollar-out. The only way to cover it is to get money from the candidate or the treasurer.

An anonymous source told the Daily Beast that Cawthorn isn't willing to start another campaign, use his own money, or raise money to repay his donors.

Cawthorn did not reply to Insider's request for comment.
