In a swap of players who are each coming off the best season of their careers, the teams announced on Friday that Matthew Tkachuck is being traded to the Florida panthers.
The team said that Tkachuk will sign an extension with Florida. Tkachuk decided earlier in the week that he would not accept such a deal to stay inCalgary, which immediately led to trade talks and no shortage of suitors around the NHL wanting to land him
The team that won the President's Trophy for having the best regular-season record in the NHL wanted him more than anyone else.
They gave up their career leader in games, assists and points, Jonathan Huberdeau, in order to make the deal happen. The move breaks up one of the top duos in hockey after they formed a 1-2 punch.
It didn't translate into the type of success Florida is looking for in the playoffs. After winning a playoff series for the first time in 18 years, the panthers were swept by the bay in the second round and only scored three goals.
This past season, Tkachuk had career bests in goals, assists, and points for the Flames. The career bests of 30 goals and 85 assists were both franchise records for the Florida panthers.
The trade means that the two leading scorer from this past season are gone. Johnny Gaudreau, who led the Flames with 115 points, signed a seven-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The decision was made between committing to him with a long-term, big-money deal or looking to make another splashy move.
It was something that went into Florida's thinking when they decided to make an eight-year commitment. The age is one of the few things that separates Tkachuk and Huberdeau, both are left wings and have averaged nine points for every 10 games played in their NHL careers.
