RG III: 'Everyone is sleeping on the Raiders!' (2:37)

The Raiders are in the AFC West. There is a time and a place for it.

After a season of turmoil, tragedy and an unlikely playoff berth, the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback said he hoped having to deal with such off-the-field issues was behind him.

With a new regime leading the organization under owner Mark Davis, it's especially difficult.

In his first media availability of training camp, Carr said that they have had a lot of time since all of that happened.

At the time, I didn't get a chance to feel all of the emotions, but after the season, it just hits you. Life changes for families and careers that are done are more so. It hits you because it happened and we were right back here to play. We didn't get to comprehend it all because of the amount of stuff in your mind.

The email scandal cost the former coach his job and he resigned. A young woman and her dog were killed in a fiery high-speed car crash in Las Vegas less than a month ago. The team released him less than a day later.

The former first-round pick was cut after he published a video of himself brandishing guns and making threats.

Carr didn't like checking his phone when he woke up because he didn't want to see more bad news.

Instead, the Raiders went on a four-game winning streak to end the season that allowed them to finish 10-7 and claim the franchise's first postseason bid since 2001. The Raiders were knocked out of the playoffs in the wild-card round.

Two-time All-Pro receiver Davante Adams and two-time All-Pro edge rusher Chandler Jones were acquired by Las Vegas, as well as Maxx Crosby and Hunter Renfrow.

In June, Carr signed a three-year extension.

"There's a lot that he does every day to give you a lot of confidence in what he can do with your team," he said in the mini camp. I'm not sure how other people rate him. I'm pretty sure that I'm seeing things that he's doing well. He is getting to know some of the new people.

I love that he doesn't treat anyone differently. That is a positive sign of a leader. He talks to everyone at every position, not just the guys in the first huddle. I've been very pleased with him.

The hardest questions Carr had to answer were about how to handle off-the-field issues.

Carr said that he had a few days to think about it after the season. Since football started, we've been talking and working on the play book. That has been good.

I'm happy that it's behind us.
