With both the former European Tour and its American counterpart the PGA Tour involved in an increasingly acrimonious battle with the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV Golf Series, it provides a welcome shot in the arm for the sport.

The four-time major winner was in contention for the title until the final two holes. He is among a group of other major winners.
Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the US Open last year, will be joined by 2016 Masters winner Danny Willett and the winner of the BMW PGA Championship Billy Horschel.
