President Joe Biden had a mild case of COVID-19 and had a nose that wasn't fully open. Insider was told that the president's chances of developing a serious disease are low.
According to the White House, Biden is currently experiencing very mild symptoms and has already begun taking Paxlovid, a drug used to fight COVID-19. The president's doctor said in a memo that he had fatigue and a dry cough.
On Friday, Biden's doctor said that his oxygen rates are normal and that he'd taken a night's sleep after having a temperature over 100 degrees. The president had a cough and a deeper voice.
Biden is in an age group with high mortality rates but his health and vaccinations give him great protection. The chances of the commander-in-chief's health taking a severe turn as "incredibly low," a situation likely to require the 25th Amendment and transferring control of the US's nuclear forces to the vice president while he would undergo treatment at Walter Reed National Military were described
For as long as he's on Paxlovid, Biden will have to stop taking two of his regular medications, one that lowers cholesterol and the other that is a blood thinner for a heart condition.
"It's a very standard, common thing that we do when we give people Paxlovid," the White House COVID-19 coordinating doctor said. Both of them are stopped for five days on Paxlovid. It's absolutely normal practice.
According to Kevin O'Connor, Biden has already received four shots. O'Connor was positive about Biden's chances for a quick recovery.
O'Connor wrote that he anticipated that the President would respond favorably because he was fully vaccine and twice-boosted.
The World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both recommend that older adults get an extra boost to protect them against severe disease.
According to a June study of older adults from Israel, having the second boost gives elders more protection from bad coronaviruses.
Those who received a fourth dose had a 3.5-fold lower rate of severe disease after 6 weeks.
Recent data on tens of thousands of Swedes shows that a fourth dose can help protect against death from COVID, even in the oldest and frailest patients.
If you haven't gotten a vaccine in the year 2022, you need to. You have to get one now.
According to Insider, an infectious disease expert at Harvard Medical School, Biden is in good health, which could bode well for him having a mild case. The health summary presented by O'Connor did not show any serious health issues.
"He's old, but he seems to be pretty vigorous, there's nothing I've heard to say that he's got comorbid illnesses, like bad heart disease, or lung disease, or liver disease, or cancer." His risk of a bad outcome is incredibly low because he is simply old and healthy.
Dr. Cohen is the medical director of infections prevention at the University of Washington. The White House staff has consulted on Biden's care.
Biden's vaccine status makes him less likely to get a serious illness.
Cohen said that the data showed how important it was to be boosted in terms of preventing severe outcomes from Omicron. It is hoped that that will give a lot of people some peace of mind.
