According to the panel, Trump didn't want to punish Capitol rioters.
Gohmert told Newsmax that he would like to see the release of Capitol rioters.
Gohmert said he wasn't following the hearings.
After the January 6 committee hearing, where it was revealed that Donald Trump resisted punishing insurrectionists, Rep. Gohmert told Newsmax that he "grieves" for imprisoned Capitol rioters.
According to a clip published by The Daily Beast, the Texas Republican said that he thought the Capitol rioters were being treated unfairly.
"Our January 6 prisoners aren't doing so well, and having been a felony judge it grieves me to see the vendettas," said Gohmert.
There are people involved in January 6 that I would send them to prison. Most of them did not commit a felony. He said that it doesn't bode well for the justice system.
Gohmert didn't say if he was talking about Capitol riot defendants awaiting sentencing in jail or those who have already been sentenced.
He said that he wasn't watching the hearings. His comments came after the House Capitol-riot committee gave insight into Trump's actions as the violence unfolded on January 6.
The panel showed pre- recorded testimony from former White House officials who said that Trump did not make any calls in an attempt to stop the violence.
In a series of outtakes from Trump's video address the day after the Capitol riot, he can be seen resisting holding the rioters to account and calling them "patriot" instead.
One of the two Republicans on the House's select committee said the former president chose not to act when the mob got into the Capitol.
Gohmert was one of the Republicans who supported Trump's baseless claims of voter fraud. Gohmert denied asking for a pardon from Trump after the riot and called it propaganda.
In a speech last year, Gohmert said that the arrests of insurrectionists were a form of intimidation and tyranny. He said that the insurrection was set up by Pelosi.
More than 900 people have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the Capitol riot. It's not clear how many of them have a criminal record.
The most serious offenders, including the Proud Boy Dominic Pezzola, are still waiting to be sentenced.
Gohmert tried to visit the defendants in that jail, but they were not allowed in.
