The House January 6 committee pointed out a contrast between the famous photo of the Missouri Republican raising his fist to protesters and a new security camera video showing him sprinting to safety.
Elaine Luria, a Virginia Democrat who is helping lead Thursday's hearing, said that the senator had to flee. He raised his fist in solidarity with the protesters at the security gates as he walked across the East Front of the Capitol earlier that day.
The Capitol security footage was shown to the panel in case viewers didn't recognize him. The laughter could be heard in the hearing room.
Luria said that Senator Hawley fled after the protesters invaded the Capitol. "Look for yourself"

His decision to encourage protesters by gesturing to them has been defended multiple times. Significant attention has been given to the actions of the Missouri Republican.
Hawley previously told The Washington Post that he gestured toward some of them. There was a group of people standing behind the police barricades.
He condemned the storming of the Capitol later in the day.
As senators sheltered in place during the riot, some of them yelled at him. The Post reported that Romney yelled at the man.
"You have made this happen!" Romney was reported to have said.
The fist-pumping photo was used on campaign gear.
The mug is not a pro-riot mug, according to Hawley. This was not something I was doing.
