A former White House security official told the House committee investigating the attack on the Capitol that members of the Vice President's security detail were calling their families to say goodbye.

The members of the VP detail were starting to worry about their own lives. It was disturbing that there was a lot of yelling and personal calls. The official told the committee that he did not like talking about it.

There were calls to say goodbye to family members. The VP detail thought that the situation was going to get very ugly.

A Secret Service agent told the committee that if they lost any more time, they might lose the ability to leave.

Rioters broke into the Capitol and forced the Secret Service to take Vice President Mike Pence to a secure location.

On January 6th, rioters chanted "Hang Mike Pence" and went as far as to build a noose and gallows outside of the capitol building.

According to committee testimony, White House officials implored President Donald Trump to send a message to the rioters to back away from the Capitol, but he didn't relent. The president sent a message at 2:24 pm condemning the vice president for not having the courage to do what should have been done to protect the country and the constitution.

Matthew Pottinger resigned from his position as deputy national security advisor.

Pottinger was concerned that the president was attacking the vice president for doing his duty. Fuel was being poured on the fire.

Thursday's hearing by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol was the eighth in a series of hearings. There will be no hearings in August but there will be more in September according to the committee chair.
