A bipartisan resolution was introduced in the United States Senate that called for the release of Phoenix Mercury centerBrittney Griner from a Russian prison

The resolution was written by the two Democrats from Arizona and the other senator from Oregon. It was supported by 27 other senators.

Kelly said that the bipartisan resolution shows the Senate's support for her as well. Brittney is an inspiration to many people. I saw her talent on the court when I met her. We will work with the administration to ensure her safe and quick return after the Russian government wrongly imprisoned her.

During all interactions with Russia, the resolution called for the United States to raise the case of the woman. It offered support for the family of Paul Whelan, an American who is being held in Russia. As long as she's in Russian custody, it called for Russia to give consular access to her.

She pleaded guilty earlier this month and was sentenced to two years in prison. There is a 10 year sentence for the charge.

The State Department reclassified him as being wrongly held. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was disrespectful to Russian law to label the man as wrongly imprisoned.

Sen. Sinema said that Arizonans have love and admiration for the basketball player. The Department of State has determined that she was wrongly held.
