The Department of Homeland Security's inspector general has launched a criminal probe into the deletion of a trove of text messages exchanged by Secret Service agents leading up to and possibly during the Capitol riot, according to multiple reports.
The IG's office told the Secret Service to stop its internal investigation because it could interfere with the investigation.
According to multiple news outlets, the IG could refer the matter to the Justice Department if wrongdoing is found in that investigation.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, admitted in a statement to Forbes that the agency received a letter from the IG's office.
Guglielmi said that they would conduct a legal review to make sure that they did not clash with each other.
The Secret Service lost its text messages on January 5 and January 6 because of a device-replacement program. The National Archives demanded an investigation into the deletion of the texts after the January 6 committee subpoenaed the records.
