The 60 gigh of battery cells that Ford has secured will allow it to build 600,000 electric vehicles in the next three years. 70 percent of the 2 million electric vehicles it plans to build globally in one year will be built by cells it has contracts for.
"Ford's new electric vehicle lineup has generated huge enthusiasm and demand, and now we are putting the industrial system in place to scale quickly," said Jim Farley, Ford's president and CEO. The Model e team has focused on securing the battery capacity and raw materials we need to deliver breakthrough EV for millions of customers.
There will be 270,000 mustang Mach-Es for North America, Europe, and China, 150,000 F-150s for North America, 150,000 e-Transit vans for North America and Europe, and an additional electric SUV in Europe.
A new battery chemistry will be added to the Blue Oval's EV. Next year, the battery company will make packs for the Mach-E and F-150. The LFP cells will be built in the US in a year's time with a capacity of 40GWh.
It's not moving to an all-LFP lineup, but it will still use cells from two companies. Three battery plants in the US with the capacity to make 43 gigahertz of cells a year will be built by a joint venture between Ford and SK.
