Questions have been raised about the capabilities of the feature after the fatal accidents. When switched on, autopilot keeps a car centered in its lane and keeps distance from the car in front. Drivers need to keep their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention, but the system can be abused. There are more advanced versions of the software that can navigate highways. According to the NHTSA, there have been incidents in which cars using autopilot crashed into stopped cars. Vehicles with autopilot are less likely to have accidents than the average vehicle. The data should be taken with a pinch of salt. The prototype version of the Full Self-Driving software was released in October of 2020. More than 100,000 people have the software. Safety advocates argue that unleashing the experimental technology poses an unreasonable risk to other drivers. "They're using consumers, bystanders, other passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists as lab rats for an experiment for which none of these people signed up." Dozens of video clips of the system driving dangerously or unpredictably have popped up online since the Full Self-DrivingBeta went out. It forced drivers into oncoming traffic and had close calls with pedestrians. Concerns about workplace safety are not unique to the auto industry and have been raised by injury statistics and reports from media. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, OSHA gave more citations to Musk's company for vehicle manufacturing than it did to other companies. A representative from the electric car company denied those claims. Some of the people who were fired for raising issues with management were also accused of being retaliated against. SolarCity was acquired byTesla for over $2 billion. Two of Musk's cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive, were sued by a group of shareholders, who argued that Musk's decision to bail them out was a financial mistake. SolarCity's board of directors was chaired by Musk before he sold the company toTesla. Musk won the case. There has been a lot of controversy around the residential energy business.
