According to sources, the NBA fined Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob $500,000 for violating the league's policy on public discussion of collective bargaining talks.
Lacob defended the Warriors' championship roster and league-leading payroll and luxury tax bills that exceed $340 million in the team's championship season of 2021.
It is difficult to navigate this luxury tax. I returned to New York this week for labor talks. The committee has me on it. The league wants everyone to have a chance and right now there's a certain element out there that thinks we'll win the game. The reason we won is because we have the highest salaries.
We're only $60 million more than the tax. That is not a large number. Most of the $200 million is due to the luxury tax. I hope it gets back to the person who is listening because I think it's unfair. It's self-serving for me to say this, but I think the system is unfair because our team is built from the ground up.
The Warriors are expected to pay $181 million in luxury tax over the course of the next two decades.
The NBA and Players Association are talking about a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
