The new date is Jul 20, 2022.

From 1990 to 2020, the United States manufactured or imported a record number of assault rifles and AK-style guns, according to an estimate by the firearms industry group.

In 2020 alone, the United States is estimated to have imported or manufactured a record-breaking 2.8 million AR-15 and AK-style rifles.

Almost 20 million of these rifles were in circulation in the United States as of 2018?

In the late 1990s, when many of the AK-style rifles were banned for civilian use under the federal assault weapons ban, manufacturing figures for the rifles were less than 100,000 per year.

Semi-automatic rifles produced for both civilian and police use are included in the figures.

Every year, the number of guns increases. A record-breaking 22.8 million firearms were sold in the United States in 2020, according to a consulting firm. Since then, monthly firearm sales have slowed, but are still above pre-pandemic levels.

Key Background

The United States has more guns in civilian hands than any other country on Earth, with some estimates pegging the number of firearms in circulation at less than 400 million. Many of those firearms are handguns, but they are controversial because they have been used in many of America's worst mass shootings, and because they can be more lethal than other guns. Several states have passed assault weapons bans, and Democrats are pushing for a nationwide prohibition on assault weapons that are defined as assault weapons, an idea that was left out of last month's gun control bill. However, firearm groups say that a ban would have a limited effect on gun crime because they are easy to use and give light recoil.

Existing gun owners wouldn't be required to give up their firearms if Congress passes an assault weapons ban. Gun control advocates would like to tighten ownership rules for semi-automatic rifles already in circulation or buy some guns back from their owners, but gun control opponents say criminals could ignore these initiatives.

The U.S. mass shooting is close to a record breaking level.
