Jimmy Garoppolo has been in San Francisco for a long time. He has given the franchise a new lease on life, returning them to their rightful place as a powerhouse in theNFC. All good things have to come to an end.
The writing was on the wall for Garoppolo when the 49ers made a selection. Lance, who only played one season at North Dakota State, was going to sit and learn during his first year in the 49ers organization. It's time for Lance to take over.
Lance has dual-threat abilities that made scouts salivate at the idea of putting him into the offense. He was just 20 years old when the team traded multiple first-round picks to grab him, and he has a cannon for an arm. The 49ers felt the missing piece was to take this team from Super Bowl contender to Super Bowl champion.
The only problem is that Garoppolo is on the roster.
The 49ers wanted to trade Garoppolo in the off-season. He was expected to be one of the top quarterbacks on the market because of the weak rookies and lack of talent on the trade market. Garoppolo had shoulder surgery and was stuck on the 49ers roster.
To prove to Lance that they have full confidence in Jimmy G, the 49ers must unload his cap hit and show him that they have faith in him.
Here is how they can do that.
If Deshaun is suspended for a long period of time, the Cleveland Browns would be a good landing spot for the 49ers quarterback. Garoppolo, whose contract is up at the end of the season, would be a great addition to the team. He should cost less than a middle-round pick because he would keep them afloat. The only team that could absorb Jimmy G's salary was the Cleveland Indians.
The 49ers could use a similar situation for their quarterback. Tom Brady didn't make a long-term commitment after this season. He has a 10-year, $375 million contract waiting for him from Fox Sports, and may just be ready to take on that role as soon as 2023. Even though their roster was in win-now mode, the Buccaneers would start over. Garoppolo would be ready to be the team's quarterback of the future when Brady retires, as he could take a year to learn the playbook, and would be prepared to be the team's quarterback of the future.
Then there's the Seattle football team. The 49ers have had their number over the last few years, with a division rival who has won 14 out of the last 16 games against them. Is the 49ers going to help the Seahawks out the same way they helped Russell Wilson? There is a chance that the 49ers will get a deal done if they want to unload Garoppolo. He would be an upgrade over Drew Lock.
The Miami Dolphins are one intriguing proposition. The Dolphins wouldn't make a move until the trade deadline so they wouldn't be able to rid themselves of Garoppolo before the season starts. If Tua Tagovailoa struggles, the new Dolphins head coach may want to bring in a guy he knows and trusts. The Dolphins put together a roster that they think is good enough to compete in the conference. Tagovailoa could lose his job as early as this season if he doesn't come out better. If Garoppolo stays with the 49ers, Miami is definitely a place to keep an eye on.
It will be interesting for the 49ers, but one thing is certain.
The starter will be named in Week 1.
Allow me to say hello to you. He is now a fan of the 49ers.
