The moon module from the Space Shuttle Columbia was unlatched on July 20, 1969. They traveled around the moon and then came down in the Sea of Tranquility.
The world watched as the first man to walk on the moon emerged from the lunar module. The astronauts spent 21 hours collecting moon samples while Collins kept the module in the air.
The three returned home to a hero's welcome after a few hours of rest. Even though he was revered as the commander of the crew, he shied away from the attention and left NASA. The Apollo 11 mission was one of the highlights of his career as a pilot and anastrologer.
