When the app is running in the background, third-party accessories with U1 chip integration will be able to interact with iPhone apps.
In a press release today, chipmaker Qorvo said that it has added a new feature that will allow U1-enabled accessories to work in tandem with Apple's mobile operating system to make real-time actions based on your precise location.
Qorvo's Ultra Wideband chips are now certified by Apple's MFi Program, which will pave the way for third-party brands to make U1 compatible accessories. Qorvo's chips can be used to make accessories that are compatible with U1 models.
Apple's own accessories offer a similar experience. Users can hold a U1 equipped phone near a mini to "hand off" music. The Precision Finding feature makes it easy to locate an AirTag.
Apple's U1 chip uses Ultra Wideband technology for ultra-precise spatial awareness, it's built into the newer Apple Watch Series 6 models and newer, as well as the AirTag.
