According to sources, Stenson is preparing to join LIV Golf and will no longer serve as the European captain at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Stenson wouldn't be the captain of the European team next year.

It has become clear that he won't be able to fulfill certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe that he had committed to prior to his announcement as captain, and it is therefore not possible for him to do so.

A new captain will be named soon. England's Luke Donald, Scotland's Paul Lawrie, Sweden's Robert Karlsson, and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn are possible replacements for Stenson as captain.

The Telegraph of London reported Tuesday night that Stenson was joining LIV Golf. An announcement is possible as early as Wednesday.

The next LIV GolfInvitational Series event will be held at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey on July 29-31, and is expected to feature the debut of two new players in the series. Three spots are still available, and will be announced in the coming days.

A group of players on the PGA Tour said last week at The Open at St. Andrew, Scotland, that Stenson was going to sign a multiyear deal with LIV Golf that could be worth as much as 40 million dollars.

Stenson signed a contract prohibiting him from playing on any other tour besides the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

It's another blow for the European team, which has already had several of its most notable players defect to the other side of the pond.

The Open Championship at Royal Troon was won by Stenson with a major championship scoring record of 260. Stenson has six wins on the PGA Tour, including the Tour Championship. He hasn't won on the PGA Tour in a long time.

When he was asked what his schedule would be, he was not sure. The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club is about an hour from Rome. The biennial golf tournament will be held there from September 25 to October 1.
