Henrik Stenson removed as Europe's Ryder Cup captain

The captain of Europe's Ryder Cup team has been replaced.

The Swedish golfer is close to agreeing to play for the new Saudi-backed golf series.

The decision to replace him as captain was made after discussions with the officials of the European team.

His tenure as captain has ended immediately.

It had become clear that he wouldn't be able to fulfill certain contractual obligations due to his personal circumstances, and that's why the decision had been made.

"There has been a lot of rumors and speculation in the media over a long period of time," said Stenson at the time.

I'm committed to being the captain and delivering the best result I can for the team. It has been focused on that and moving toward Rome.
