On the second day of the heat, the record was set.
According to the UK's Met Office, Monday night was the hottest night in the UK. There is a minimum temperature of 78.4 F (25.8 C) on the outskirts of London.
Prof Hannah Cloke, natural hazard researcher at the University of Reading, said in a Monday statement to the UK's Science Media Center that the red warning for extreme heat is a wake-up call.
This is frightening even for a climate scientist. She said that it felt real.
The current heat wave was caused by hot air going north from Africa, where it broke a number of local heat records in Europe.
Two weather stations in Nmes, France, recorded a temperature of 104 F (40 C) in July, which was the highest for the city in the month.
Ireland's temperature on Monday was 91.4 F (33 C), the highest since an 1886 record of 92.94 F (33.3 C).

The region's press office said at least 16,000 people were evacuated because of the large fires.
The UK is not built for extreme heat according to George Havenith.
In countries that have not been hit by high temperatures, the heat can be very damaging.
People here don't have the training to deal with the heat like someone from a Southern country.
Steven Pawson, chief of the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office at NASA, said in a press release that the heat wave is an indicator that emissions of greenhouse gases by human activity are causing weather extremes.
